SoulShifter
SoulShifter Bio:

From the moment he picked up a guitar and opened his mouth to sing in 1993, Soulshifter was been touching others with his blend of raw emotion, soulful wisdom, and an understanding of the hardships of life. Self-taught and self promoting, he has gone from playing soley to friends and family to the venues of Santa Barbara, telivision, and now the internet and internet radio. Currently a solo artist, he has written, recorded, and produced his first CD on his own. His combination of powerful lyrics and raw emotion holds the attention of all who listen. He is currently looking to put together a band to perform live shows.

Trish's Review: Soulshifter
Current mood: impressed
Paul Navarro-Guevara, known as SoulShifter, has been writing, arranging, and performing his own original music for the last 14 years to the pleasure of his friends and family. Though he's been compared to greats like Jim Morrison with his poetic style and singing with the raw intensity of Eddie Vedder, his music is truly his own. His music spans the genres- from melodic ballads to Gen X grunge to masterful hard rock- no matter what sound, he speaks the truth and pours out his heart and soul into songs that touch all his listeners. As stated on his site, with the encouragement of his loved ones, hes taken his sound to the venues of Santa Barbara and television. With the benefit of myspace.com, heres hoping he takes his music to the world and they see what we see. A great artist, performing great music.

I have been writing songs since the moment I first picked up a guitar 14 years ago, as a way to vent all of the pain, rage, confusion, and fear that haunted me. I taught myself how to play guitar on an old guitar from Sears that someone gave me. Through out the years, I have also taught myself how to play the piano, bass, and recently the drums. All of the songs you hear on this page were done entirely by yours truley. I also want it known that I am a beginner with all of my instruments except the guitar. I've been crudely recording myself since 1994, as way to hear myself so that I could further my growth as a musician. Over the last few years, I've obtained a portable digital studio. I taught myself how to crudely engineer and produce songs, and most recently, an entire album. I know the recording quality isn't that great, but considering I hardly know what I'm doing, I did one hell of a job. :) I have used music for years as an emotional and spiritual outlet for myself. Over the years of sharing them with close friends, I realized I wasn't the only one affected by these songs. As they are my medicine, I realized that others find my music to be a medicine as well. After years of pushing me to go public, in 2003 I started playing solo shows in Santa Barbara and did a few tv shows on our local channel 17. After years of trying to find the right bandmates, I said screw it and started teaching myself bass and drums. Now, I can present my music as I've always heard it in my head- complete.

About "As We Stand"
Category: Music

Back in March of 2005, I was pondering life and it's greater meanings as I always do, and I was thinking about Bob Marley, Dr King, my indiginous culture, the world. I thought to myself that we are all 1 in the end, that we all come from the same source. This is 1 world, and we all have to live here. With all of this chaos in the world, what we're lacking is a common ground. We are all different, yet we are all the same. From Vampires to Mormons, from Pagans to Atheists, Native Americans to Muslims, we all have a common ground. We just need to realize it. So, here we stand argueing about how we came to be. Every culture, every person has their story of how they were created, just like we each have a song. Well, if I were to have just 1 song under my belt, this one would be it; nothing frustrates me more than the condition of our realm. We are all connected, not seperate.

At some point in our lives, whether sooner or later, we all have that feeling of wanting to just get up and just take off, to be anywhere but where you're at now. When this song was written 11 years ago, I was definietely at that point in my life. My life up to that point was riddled with stress, abuse, ****ed up situations, violence, and meth. I had a dream in which I was driving a car and died by driving off of a cliff. Walking away from my burning wreckage, I saw a ghost-like woman in the distance. As I followed her, I realized that all of the events up to that point in my life had added up. All of the pain, rage, confusion, and stubborness had come to a climax. All I wanted to do was go away, yet could not think of a single place to go. At the end of the dream, I awoke in a cold sweat, out of breath, and the music for this song dancing in my head. I wrote the entire song in 5 minutes, everything spilling out, under preesure, now released. I cried as I worked that song out. The first time I ever played this song was in high school during a vocal class. We had to perform a song, whether ours or someone elses. I chose my own. When I started playing, there was about 20 of us in the room. When I was done, the room was filled with people who had heard it from outside. They applauded very loudly, and after that people would come up to me letting me know how much that song spoke for them. It was one those turning moments in my life when I truely realized I was not alone in my pain, nor in my thoughts. Others knew what I felt, because they felt it too. This song is for those who want to go, but have nowhere to run to... I feel you 100%

For many people, self-medication by way of booze, drugs, and pills, or a mixture of the three is the prescription when the **** hits the fan. For a lot of people, **** hits the fan daily. this song was born at a stage when the self medication bordered on addiction. At the time, it reminded me of a former addiction that almost killed me; Meth. There is light at the end of this dark, tortured road....
